Travelogue 7: A New York State of Mind
A week before last, I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days in New York while en route from Dubai to Canada. My agenda was packed—important client meetings and catching up with our team based there. But what stood out most wasn’t the business—it was the sheer energy of the city, even in the face of extreme weather.
As our flight touched down, the pilot announced the temperature: -7°C, but with the wind chill, it felt like -17°C. I’ve been to New York many times, but I don’t ever recall it being this bitterly cold. Naturally, I assumed the city would be slowed down by the harsh conditions.
Having spent time in Toronto, where the extensive underground PATH system allows people to move seamlessly through the downtown core without braving the cold, I wondered how New Yorkers would adapt. After all, New York doesn’t have that kind of infrastructure. Would the streets be empty? Would people opt to stay indoors?
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Despite the freezing temperatures, the city was buzzing. Restaurants were packed, Broadway shows were sold out, and even Central Park had its fair share of visitors. It was business as usual. The indomitable spirit of New Yorkers was on full display—a collective resilience that refuses to be dictated by external conditions.
It reminded me of Billy Joel’s classic song, New York State of Mind. Curious, I looked up what the phrase truly means. And sure enough, it encapsulates exactly what I felt—an unshakable confidence, a deep-rooted love for the city, and an attitude that nothing can slow down.
New York isn’t just a city; it’s a mindset. A way of life. And no matter how many times you visit, it always finds a way to inspire you.
Leaving you with this fantastic live performance of New York State of Mind by Billy Joel & Tony Bennett at Shea Stadium—because some things just can’t be put into words.
Enjoy the song, and if you’ve ever experienced the New York State of Mind, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
